TU Darmstadt | Institut für Theologie und Sozialethik (iths)It exists in Darmstadt; and it is already in its fourth decade. In the 1970s, the newly founded Institute for Theology and Social Ethics (iths) began its teaching and research operations at the TU Darmstadt in order to qualify young people for the profession of religion teacher at industrial-technical vocational schools. Since then, it has been possible to complete the two courses of study 'Protestant and Catholic Religion for the Teaching Profession at Vocational Schools' at the iths in Darmstadt.

But not only that: from the beginning it was part of the self-conception of the Darmstadt institute not to dwell on theology alone. Rather, one wanted consciously to place oneself in the context of political, social and technical sciences and to ask in an interdisciplinary perspective about the chances and challenges of Christian theology and social ethics 'in the technical-industrial world of today'. For this reason, problems of the rapidly changing world of work and professions and the tense encounter between technology and ethics have long been part of the Institute's specific teaching and research profile. In addition, there are the pressing questions about the future of the working society and the welfare state, about national and international solidarity and justice, which are dealt with not only from a theological-social-ethical perspective, but also from the perspectives of sociology of religion, social theory and political philosophy.
